Highlights

In the September 2008 year:

There were 64,540 live births registered in New Zealand.
The birth rate was 2.2 births per woman.
Women aged 30–34 years had the highest fertility rate (127 births per 1,000 women).
The median age of women giving birth was 30 years.
The median age of women giving birth to their first child was 28 years.
The infant mortality rate was 5.3 deaths per 1,000 live births.
There were 29,130 deaths registered.
Births exceeded deaths by 35,410.
