Births and Deaths: June 2008 quarter

In the June 2008 year:

• There were 64,140 live births registered in New Zealand.
  
  
• The birth rate was 2.2 births per woman.
  
  
• Women aged 30–34 years had the highest fertility rate (126 births per 1,000 women).
  
  
• The median age of women giving birth was 30 years.
  
  
• The median age of women giving birth to their first child was 28 years.
  
  
• The infant mortality rate was 5.4 deaths per 1,000 live births.
  
  
• There were 28,690 deaths registered.
  
  
• Births exceeded deaths by 35,460.
