Longitudinal Immigration Survey: New Zealand

Purpose of LisNZ | Latest releases | LisNZ – key topics | Related information | Access to LisNZ data

The Longitudinal Immigration Survey: New Zealand (LisNZ) collected information on how well migrants settle, both socially and economically, during their first three years as permanent residents of New Zealand.

LisNZ followed the same migrants at 6, 18, and 36 months after taking up permanent residence. All three waves of data have been collected, and output datasets are available for use. At the end of wave 3 interviews in October 2009, Statistics New Zealand had collected data from over 5,000 migrants. For more information on accessing the data, see ‘Access to LisNZ data’ at the bottom of this page.

LisNZ is a partnership between Statistics NZ and the Department of Labour. Statistics NZ conducts the interviews and creates the datasets. You can find more information on LisNZ in the Immigration Research section of the Immigration New Zealand website.

Purpose of LisNZ

Government agencies and other groups will use the findings from LisNZ to inform immigration policies and improve settlement services for migrants. More than 85 groups participated in the development of LisNZ, including central government agencies, ethnic and community groups, non-governmental organisations, local government, and academics.

Research based on LisNZ data will be used to:

  • inform immigration policy
  • provide insights into other social and economic policy development
  • provide information to local government, the voluntary sector, and community groups
  • enable further academic research that focuses on migration issues.
