Screen Industry Survey: 2007/08 - Media Release

Total revenue, which includes funding, sales and royalties, for the New Zealand screen industry increased 11 percent to $2,743 million in the 2008 financial year, Statistics New Zealand said today.

This growth in revenue was driven mainly by an increase in funding received by screen production companies that totalled $644 million, up from $406 million in 2007. In 2008, the majority (55 percent) of funding was used to produce feature films. This contrasts with 2007, when over half of the funding was used to produce television programmes.

Funding is sourced from both New Zealand and overseas. The United States sources increased their funding contribution more than any other country – up to $340 million from $161 million in 2007, making the United States the largest contributor to the New Zealand screen production sector. New Zealand was the next largest contributor with $276 million.

Further results will be released in August 2009.
