Sheep numbers decrease
Highlights
At 30 June 2007:
Sheep numbers fell to 38.5 million, down 4 percent from 2006.
Dairy cattle numbers reached 5.3 million, up 2 percent from 2002.
Dairy milking cows and heifers numbered 4.2 million, up 8 percent from 2002.
The area planted in kiwifruit rose to 13,250 hectares, up 12 percent from 2002.
There were 29,620 hectares planted in wine grapes, 17,170 hectares were in Marlborough.
During the year ended 31 March 2007:
New area planted in forestry fell to 2,600 hectares, down 92 percent from the 33,700 hectares recorded in the 2002 Agricultural Census.
