In September 2008 compared with September 2007:
- Total guest nights decreased 5 percent – the fourth consecutive month to show a fall.
- All five accommodation types had fewer guest nights, led by motels and backpackers.
- Ten of the 12 regions recorded fewer guest nights, led by Bay of Plenty and Otago.
The trend in total guest nights has been decreasing since October 2007 but is still higher than the most recent low point in January 2006.
