Abstract
Given the increasing importance of the dairy sector to the New Zealand economy, robust estimates of the dairy herd are increasingly needed. The country’s official dairy cattle estimates are produced from the Agricultural Production Survey.
Two models based on population demography concepts have been developed and proven effective when validating and analysing these estimates.
Information received from farmers is aggregated to produce regional, North and South Island, and national estimates.
