We are Statistics New Zealand

We are Statistics New Zealand – your first source of information for making key decisions.

We are driving New Zealand’s economy and informing key social decisions through our official statistics.

Statistics New Zealand leads the collection and publicising of key information on nearly everything.

Some of the statistics we release are: the competitiveness of New Zealand businesses; energy use; agriculture; water resources; fish stocks; retail figures; tourism; our incomes; inflation; and who New Zealanders are.

We’re the first place to go to when making important decisions in our communities, in government and in large and small businesses. Our statistics appear in newspapers, on radio, the Internet and television every day – telling real stories about real issues.

Accurate and relevant statistics influence where companies locate, where our schools and hospitals are, and how our economy is viewed by the world.

More than that, our information inspires ideas and creates opportunities. Statistics create links and let people make connections.

Every year we collect over 60 million pieces of information and work closely with researchers, other government agencies and overseas experts to inform New Zealand.

You may already know us from the five-yearly population census, providing a snapshot of New Zealand.

Surveys such as the census are used to produce many of our statistics, although increasingly we work to use existing data such as GST data, international arrival cards and Customs records instead.

With all of our surveys we make three commitments to all New Zealanders.

Firstly we work to find innovative ways to reduce the time spent completing surveys.

And secondly, we protect the confidentiality of information provided to us. No individual or business can be identified from the statistics we release.

This commitment is carried through all of our work.

Thirdly we provide access to Statistics equally. Information is kept secret until its official release in media releases and on the Internet. Our independence means that not even the Minister of Statistics, or other government agencies, know what’s in a release until it’s made.

Once released, our statistics are available to all New Zealanders, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Through: our website, which features tables which are easy to use and tailor to your needs; our Information Centre; community and school programmes; public libraries; Source – high-level data for expert users; general and specialised publications; and Statisphere, the web portal for all government statistics.

Statistics New Zealand’s skill in collecting and providing statistics has ensured we have a strong international reputation. We are actively involved with international statistical agencies, sharing the latest ideas and knowledge to ensure we do the best job we can here at home.

This is our goal – to provide accessible, relevant and timely statistics to all New Zealanders.

We lead the Official Statistics System and work with businesses, researchers and communities.
