Statistics New Zealand is pleased to announce its student assistance scheme, which aims to support academic excellence and postgraduate research. The scheme has the following three components that focus on helping both undergraduate and postgraduate studies.
Undergraduate assistance
The recipients of the Statistics NZ undergraduate prize of 2008/09 are:

- Biyan Lee (University of Auckland)

- Jillian Skinner (Victoria University of Wellington)
- Shakira Suwan (University of Canterbury)
- Jiaxu Zeng (University of Otago).
The annual undergraduate prize has been increased to $1,000 per university.
The awarded students must be studying an undergraduate degree in statistics. Statistics departments are to choose one student based on academic excellence.
The eligible universities are:
- University of Auckland
- Auckland University of Technology
- University of Waikato
- Massey University
- Victoria University of Wellington
- Canterbury University
- University of Otago.
All eligible students should be a New Zealand citizen, or a resident legally able to work in New Zealand at the completion of study, or have an international student visa.

Summer studentship
Statistics NZ will be conducting biannual summer studentships starting in 2010. This programme aims to show students how a national statistics office operates. The selected student will be working at Statistics NZ on a project that will enhance their statistical capability.
Statistics NZ will provide the student with a stipend.
All eligible students should be a New Zealand citizen, or a resident legally able to work in New Zealand at the completion of study, or have an international student visa.
Postgraduate financial assistance with access to data
Postgraduate students requiring Statistics NZ data for their research thesis can apply for financial assistance to reduce the costs of customised dataset preparation and/or use of the onsite data laboratory. The research should use official statistics, have a direct impact on statistical methodology (that is, there is a statistical component and quantitative analysis), or a direct impact on the understanding of society or the economy.
Once the research is completed, a copy of the thesis will be supplied to Statistics NZ. The successful applicant will also do a presentation on their research findings.
