Brief description

Government Superannuation Fund Act 1956 Applies to employees who belong to this fund.
Public Records Act 2005 The Public Records Act replaces the Archives Act 1957. The Act introduces a new recordkeeping framework, and focuses on supporting good government recordkeeping, in addition to the earlier emphasis on the disposal of records.  Since the Act came into effect in 2005, it covers how Statistics New Zealand carries out its disposal processes for all statistical schedules and other documents that are no longer required for statistical purposes.
Oaths and Declarations Act 1957 Governs the making and taking of statutory declarations such as the Declaration of Secrecy specified in section 21 of the Statistics Act 1975.
Government Service Equal Pay Act 1960 Applies the principle that women should receive the same pay as men where they do equal work under equal conditions.
Local Government Act 1974 Defines minimum district populations, and requires territorial authority boundaries to align with Statistics New Zealand meshblock boundaries.
Ombudsmen Act 1975 Authorises Ombudsmen to investigate complaints made against the actions of government departments.
Statistics Act 1975 Statistics New Zealand's enabling legislation. It also covers official statistics produced by other government departments.
Contraception, Sterilisation, and Abortion Act 1977 Prescribes details to be collected on abortions, and hence limits abortion statistics to those details.
Public Finance Act 1977 Sets out duties of auditor and audit procedures. See also Public Finance Act 1989 below.
Flags, Emblems, and Names Protection Act 1981 Protects name of department from use by others in same or similar form.
Official Information Act 1982 Relates to information other than personal information (which the Privacy Act covers). Requires release of information held unless there is good reason to withhold it. With the Statistics Act, Local Government Official Information & Meetings Act, Archives Act and Privacy Act, it sets the framework for Statistics New Zealand data collection, retention and disclosure policy and practice.
Commerce Act 1986 Governs pricing and competitive behaviour.
Immigration Act 1987 Requires filling in of the arrival and departure cards used by Statistics New Zealand to produce migration statistics.
Local Government Official Information and Meetings Act 1987 Similar to Official Information Act above, but relates to local government.
Parental Leave and Employment Protection Act 1987 Prescribes minimum entitlements to parental leave and protection of rights of employees during pregnancy and parental leave.
State Sector Act 1988 Governs appointment of Government Statistician (no political input) and generally sets framework for employment contracts.
Public Finance Act 1989 Governs budgeting, financial management and reporting.
Employment Contracts Act 1991 Promotes an efficient labour market, provides for freedom of association, allows employees to determine who should represent their interests in relation to employment issues, enables each employee to choose either to negotiate an individual employment contract with his or her employer or to be bound by a collective employment contract to which his or her employer is a party, enables each employer to choose to negotiate an individual employment contract with any employee or to negotiate or to elect to be bound by a collective employment contract that binds 2 or more employees, and establishes that the question of whether employment contracts are individual or collective or both is itself a matter for negotiation by the parties themselves.
Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992 Provides for the prevention of harm to employees at work, promotes excellence in health and safety management by employers, and prescribes, and imposes on employers and others, duties in relation to the prevention of harm to employees.
Citizens Initiated Referenda Act 1993 Statistics New Zealand to provide advice to Clerk of the House on the form to be used in the referendum.
Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 Relates to the guarantees given, or deemed to be given, to consumers upon the supply of goods or services, and the rights of redress against suppliers and manufacturers in respect of any failure of goods or services to comply with any such guarantees.
Electoral Act 1993 Establishes the Representation Commission, one member of which is the Government Statistician (or deputy), with the duty of dividing New Zealand into general electoral districts following each census of population and dwellings. Requires the Government Statistician to report census results to the commission, including the Maori electoral population.
Human Rights Act 1993 Provides better protection of human rights in New Zealand in general accordance with United Nations Covenants or Conventions on Human Rights.
Privacy Act 1993 Relates to personal information (Official Information Act above relates to other information). Has special exemptions for data collected for statistical purposes (i.e. recognises that different privacy rules apply where data is used only to produce aggregate information where the identity of the individual is not material).
Copyright Act 1994 Protects copyrighted works. Copyright is a property right that exists in original works of the following descriptions: (a) literary, dramatic, musical, or artistic works (b) sound recordings (c) films (d) broadcasts (e) cable programmes (f) typographical arrangements of published editions.
Fiscal Responsibility Act 1994 Requires production of information to meet the needs of the Act.
Income Tax Act 1994 Covers Goods and Services Tax, Fringe Benefit Tax, PAYE.
Tax Administration Act 1994 Authorises Inland Revenue Department staff to provide Inland Revenue Department information to Statistics New Zealand to enable Statistics New Zealand to produce official statistics from that information.
Births, Deaths, and Marriages Registration Act 1995 Authority behind the documentation of birth, death and marriage records used in demographic statistics.
Customs and Excise Act 1996 Governs the export and import of goods and documentation pertaining to that.
