In 2006, 81.8 percent of households (or 299,607 households) who made rent payments rented from a private person, trust or business. This has increased from 72.1 percent in 1996 (196,188 households) and 78.4 percent in 2001 (264,501 households).
- Almost two-thirds (63.8 percent) of households who paid rent to either a private person, trust or business paid $200 or more a week. Of households renting from a local authority, 6.5 percent paid more than $200 a week, as did 9.3 percent of households renting from Housing New Zealand Corporation.
- Approximately nine out of ten (89.1 percent) households in the Auckland Region, who paid rent to either a private person, trust or business, paid $200 or more a week in rent. Less than 70 percent of all households in all other regions who paid rent to a private person, trust or business were paying $200 or more a week.
